She Sells Sanctuary: The Sanctuary Effect and Making Your Home a Place of Warmth and Security in 2026

In a world that sometimes feels a little unpredictable, there’s something deeply comforting about making your home a true sanctuary. For this blog, we’re exploring the cozy trend of 2026, a movement that’s all about creating warmth, security, and a sense of well-being in every corner of your home.

Why are so many of us craving cozy spaces right now? Maybe it’s the wild pace of life, or maybe it’s the desire to have a place that nurtures us, body and soul. Home is where we recharge, reflect, and find comfort, so it makes sense that more people are turning their living spaces into havens of calm and joy.

This cozy sanctuary trend is about more than just plush blankets (though we love those, too). It’s about layering soft textures, adding nature-inspired touches, and surrounding yourself with things that make you feel happy and safe. Think plush rugs underfoot, throws you can’t wait to curl up in, and tactile fabrics that invite you to relax. Plants, natural woods, and earthy tones bring a sense of serenity and keep us connected to the outdoors, even when we’re inside. The soft, quieting glow of candlelight, the mouthwatering aroma of your favorite meal, or a playlist of your favorite decompression songs can instantly transform the mood of a room and help us awaken for the new day or unwind after a long one.

Wellness spaces are a big part of this trend. Maybe it’s a bathroom that feels like a spa, a bedroom that cocoons you in softness, or a workout area allowing you to stretch and lift the day away. The idea is to design for your physical and emotional needs, not just for style. This is what designers call “emotional zoning”: creating areas in your home that match how you want to feel, whether that’s peaceful, inspired, or energized. Even a small corner set up for meditation, journaling, or morning coffee can become a personal retreat, and for some of us, that’s all we’re gonna get!

Personal touches matter, too. In my own home, I’m the weirdo who loves to iron napkins! Starch and all, and the smell, the steam, and the squeak of my mom's old expanding and contracting ironing board is home for me. My other way of getting the steam out is playing in the dirt of my urban garden, nesting and organizing my home, and enjoying a glass of wine on the deck to end my day as Paul and I wind down together. There’s a blanket that’s seen more Netflix marathons than I care to admit (My best of 2025 binge-worthy shows coming soon!) and a wall of art that makes me stop and pause every time I sit in the living room, quietly catching up with my own thoughts and ideas.

What kind of weirdo are you? What brings you joy, pause, or a smile across your face and inside your soul? This isn’t just the touchy-feely stuff. It’s the stuff that makes up the “little things”. The things we may even take for granted, because they could be mere moments passing, but they are exactly what make life worth living. Anyone can take notice of the big, grand things, that's

easy to identify and appreciate. Is it the daring new color you painted your bathroom, the newly organized closet where, by God, you were going to spark joy if it killed you, or maybe you found that album you’ve been looking for, forever, and playing it again brought you back to a place only music can take you?

The best part? Sanctuary doesn’t have to mean complicated or expensive. It’s about making intentional choices that support your wellbeing and bring you joy. Start small: every little change can help your home feel warmer and more welcoming. Rearranging furniture or simply opening the windows to let in fresh air and sunlight after days of cold weather can make a big difference, too. My favorite ritual? Sitting down with one of my many coffee table books and taking in the inspiration the author meant for me to take. No phone, no computer, no sound but an open window with the breeze and the sounds of the neighborhood as background music.

We’d love to hear how you’re making your home a sanctuary this year! Share your favorite cozy corners, decorating tips, or rituals that help you feel at ease. Whether it’s a nightly wind-down routine, a favorite mug, or a playlist that always lifts your spirits, your ideas might inspire someone else to create more comfort and joy in their own space. Let’s inspire each other to create homes that nurture and uplift us, no matter what’s happening in the outside world.
